How it sits Hangs from a small concealed metal fixture set into the back of the skull — no visible hardware, one fastener in the wall. It can equally stand unmounted as a table or console centrepiece. Hardware is adaptable, and a hardwood display stand can be made to the piece on request.

The work

The iridescent opal palette is drawn from the low, diffused light of dawn — the hour when deer move out to feed. Opal does not hold one colour; it shifts as the viewer moves, the way first light changes across a field in the space of a few minutes.

These are the smallest stones used in any piece in the collection. At that grain the surface reads almost like skin rather than mosaic, and it is the reason this work took the longest of the four to set.

This is the piece that changes most with its surroundings. Near a window it will not look the same at seven in the morning as it does at four in the afternoon.
