How it sits Hangs from a small concealed metal fixture set into the back of the skull — no visible hardware, one fastener in the wall. It can equally stand unmounted as a table or console centrepiece. Hardware is adaptable, and a hardwood display stand can be made to the piece on request.

The work

Dark siam is the red of late autumn — oak leaves holding on after the maples have gone, the last colour in the woods before everything turns brown. It is also the season of the eight-point buck, the weeks when an animal that has spent a year staying hidden becomes suddenly, fatally visible.

The stones here are the largest in the collection, set to catch light in broad facets rather than fine grain. The deepest sit along the ridge of the skull and lighten toward the base, so the piece holds its darkness at the top and opens as it descends.
