The work
The clear stones are set in vertical lines rather than scattered — a decision drawn from the mule deer's own country. This is an animal of rock faces and broken ground, and the lines carry the eye down the skull the way stone carries water. In changing light the piece reads differently from every angle: sharp and prismatic under direct light, quiet and almost grey in shadow.
At 22 inches this is the largest completed work in the collection, and the one that most rewards being placed where light moves across it through the day.
